I walked into a pub. Not my local where the bar staff pour my drink as I walk up to the bar. No, I was in a different town. The young barman looked straight through me. He served the guy next to me first.
Then the guy after that.
I stood there like a ghost in my own lifetime.
That moment hit me because I wasnt used to being ignored. Is that what happens to most men after 60? in a lot of cases, the answer is yes.
We don’t die.
We just become invisible. And once you become invisible, you’re already halfway to the grave. That’s why the first pillar of Mangod is simple and non-negotiable:
Stay Relevant.
What “Stay Relevant” Actually Means After 60 doesn’t mean chasing trends or pretending you’re 35 again. It means refusing to be written off as “just another old grey haired, past it shadow of a man.”
It means staying sharp, useful, respected, and in the game — long after western society has decided you should quietly disappear. Because unlike some cultures where wisdom is revered, today, old men seem to not command any respect. Yet we can. There is a way. But you may have to re-think about what you have become, stuck in your old ways.
Here’s what it looks like in practice:
1. Stay Sharp Mentally
The world moves fast. Learn about new tech. You don’t have to master it. Understand the new culture. Read what the younger generation is reading. It may burn your ears but have a listen to the top songs on the radio. If you cannot stand the music, remember what the men of your fathers age said when they heard the music you listened to when you were a kid. Adapt.
If you don’t stay curious, you become irrelevant.
2. Stay Sharp in Business & Money
Don’t hand your brain in with your retirement papers. Start the side hustle. Negotiate the deal. Invest in yourself. The day you stop building is the day you start dying.
3. Stay Sharp Physically
Look like a man who still has fight left in him. As the old Irish crooner Val Doonican used to sing, “Walk tall and look the world right in the eye”. I tought my own sons that. you forget. Walk tall. Walk with presence. Train with purpose. Buy new clothes and dress like you still matter — because you do.
4. Stay Sharp Socially
Don’t become the quiet guy in the corner sitting in the dimly lit out of the way spot where nobody notices you. If you do that, you are already fading away.
Be noticed but be cool. Dont be a know it all pain in the bum. Talk with the authority that comes from experience. Don’t lecture, converse. Speak up when you feel you need to. Tell your stories but don’t be the all knowing dick. Be humble. Choose when to talk. Give the honest advice only you can give because you have been there, done that and learnt through experience. The world still needs old boys — but only if the lions still roar. The Brutal truth, The moment you accept being invisible, you hand the world permission to treat you like you’re already dead. Most men do exactly that, they shrink. They go quiet. They fade away while they’re still breathing. Don’t be most men.
Stay Relevant isn’t about staying young.
It’s about refusing to die early. Your move this week is to do one thing that proves to yourself — and everyone around you — that you’re still in the game.
